The Tenuta Di Vaira 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Bolgherese is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc that is fermented in steel and aged in barrique. True to the vintage and to the warmth that characterizes this sunny corner of Tuscany, the wine shows soft ripe fruit that is framed by toasted oak, licorice and grilled herb. This is a full-bodied red with stemmy tannins that should hold for the long haul.

From a cooler vintage, the 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Bolgherese (a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot) has a slightly unripe character with green olive, tea leaf, tin can and lot of dark stone and crushed granite. On the palate, the wine is streamlined yet also quite dense.

The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Bolgherese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that ages in barrique for a standard 16 months. From a hot and dry vintage, this wine shows dark fruit and savory spice with lots of dark clove, tar and campfire ash. That full-bodied richness is characteristic of this season, and this wine takes all that intensity and darkness one step further. The mouthfeel is a bit tannic and tight, with a touch of cherry sourness as well. Try it with a beef fondue in front of the fire this winter.

This wine is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Bolgherese is an inky-black blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with lots of black fruit and cherry packed tight at the core. The wine alternates between moments of sweet and savory flavors, ultimately finishing on a sweet signature. It shows a lush, mid-weight approach with nice freshness and simple brightness too.

I'm less a fan of the overt ripeness on the 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Bolgherese. It feels overdone. The fruit on this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot (aged in oak for 16 months) is large and flat, although it does afford notes of dark spice, dark plummy fruit and a hint of raisin. Some 6,500 bottles were made.
