The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva shows the power and richness of the year, but I am not sure it is better than the entry-level wines here. Actually it isn’t. Dark fruit, smoke, tobacco and licorice take shape in the glass, but ultimately this is a wine that is trying too hard to be something it isn’t. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva emerges from the glass with dark fruit, smoke, tar, chocolate and French oak, all wrapped around a serious, powerful core. This is a rather intense, brooding style for Toscolo, yet all of the elements come together with plenty of grace and balance.
