Matured in French oak barrels, 30% new, the 2008 Shiraz has a deep garnet-purple color and gives earthy / savory notes of game, black truffles, damp loam, Chinese dried plum and blackberry preserves over hints of soy and Indian spices. Medium bodied with layers of savory and spice flavors, the palate has crisp acid and a medium level of fine-grained tannins, finishing long with a suggestion of menthol. Drinking beautifully now, it should cellar to 2016. Although Umamu Estate is a relatively new venture initiated in 2005, the vineyards are well established, dating back to 1978. These early efforts are very good and suggest a lot of potential.Imported by: Karadeci Group Inc, Tampa, FL; www.karadeci.com
