The Valle dell'Acate 2017 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Il Moro is charming, full and generous with plenty of warm and soothing flavors generated by the relentless Sicilian sun. This hot vintage expression certainly doles out the more mature side of cherry, plum and blackcurrant. But the grape, the mighty Nero d'Avola, can easily be recognized, thanks to those distinctive tones of scorched earth and black olive. It's perfect for a skillet of sausage, peppers and mushrooms. Some 30,000 bottles were made.

Finely delineated and tight, the 2015 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Il Moro is a unique, leanly textured expression of this Sicilian grape. This wine offers nuance and detail on the bouquet with dark cherry, spice, leather and pipe tobacco. It is light-hearted in character and purposely avoids the heaviness and richness you often get with this grape. Instead, you are treated to a fresh and easy-drinking interpretation. Bottle production is 30,000 units strong.

Now a Sicilia DOC wine, the 2013 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Il Moro is a tight and streamlined expression of Sicily's number one indigenous grape. True to the variety, the wine offers immediate notes of caper and black olive that remind you of its Mediterranean origins. Soon to follow are buoyant layers of dark berry, cherry and a pungent touch of crushed black pepper that adds zest and spice to the finish. If you are looking for an authentic taste of this workhorse grape, Il Moro should not be missed.

The 2008 Il Moro shows the darker side of Nero D'Avola in its dark wild cherries, flowers, leather and licorice. It offers excellent length and fine overall balance. A final blast of ripe, juicy plums punctuates the finish. The Moro was aged in stainless steel. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. This is a superb set of wines from Valle dell'Acate. Not only are the wines delicious, the best bottles deliver incredible value as well.
