The 2006 RESERVA is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) with a dollop of Tinta Amarela, aged in new French oak for 16 months. Powerful and gripping, with hard and drying tannins, it is easily the deepest and most concentrated of this winery’s offerings reviewed this issue, but not necessarily the best balanced or most charming. It is also the most flamboyant, with kirsch notes popping up on the finish and the nose. There is some question on balance given the pure power and the relatively elegant mid-palate. That said, this has a lot to offer in intensity of flavor, structure and aging potential. It will be interesting to see where it goes, but I suspect most will not think it is worth the big price differential between it and its siblings reviewed this issue. There were slightly less than 4,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2020. The winemaker at this old (1913) Northern Portuguese property is Rui Cunha. Although the wines are in the general vicinity of the Douro appellation, this property is located North of the Douro and they are not Douro DOC wines. Apart from location, most of the wines are vinho regional wines as they contain international grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon.Importer: Ingenium Wines, Huntsville, AL; tel: (256) 684-2543.
