Sourced from La Crau and aged in foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. It features charming notes of cherries and strawberries on the nose, but it's decidedly less charming and firmly tannic on the medium to full-bodied palate, finishing quite dry and astringent.

Plummy and dense, but also packed with astringent tannins, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape may come around with additional maturation and short-term cellaring, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I tasted the final blend of the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape prior to bottling. It's a medium to full-bodied blend dominated by Grenache, but it boasts some firm, dusty tannins to frame its blueberry and cherry fruit. Give it a couple more years in the cellar after bottling, then drink it over the next decade. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

More than 85% Grenache, with the balance made up of Mourvèdre (10%) and other permitted varieties (a slight change from what I was told last year when tasting a prospective blend), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape balances delicate raspberry tones against sturdier notes of cola, black olive and earth. Full-bodied and velvety, it's nearly ready to drink, and it should last for a decade.
