No, I cannot pronounce the name either, but the Ngakirikiri Vineyard 2007 could turn out to be Villa Maria’s greatest achievement to date. Tasted in London, it is a blend of 49% Merlot, 49% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec and has a fragrant nose of blackberry, black olive and a touch of green pepper. Wonderful definition. The palate has a dense, tannic entry but a beguiling purity and a thrilling sense of Old World austerity and New World exuberance. Bewitching complexity on the finish. This wine will not be released until 2010 but grab a bottle if can find one.
Villa Maria continues to serve as the great ambassadors to New Zealand wine, appealing to both supermarket consumers and connoisseurs.
