One of Mendoza’s few Nebbiolo wines, which might be a surprise considering the region’s Italian heritage, the sublime 2009 Nebbiolo comes from three prephylloxera clones originally bought from Piedmont by Rodrigo’s great-grandfather. It has a very elegant bouquet with fine delineation: lifted raspberry fruit, wild strawberry and red currants that are immensely pure. Somehow, the bouquet whisks you straight to the hills of Piedmont – the sign of a great wine. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, a fine thread of acidity, fine tannins and great tension on the elegant finish. It is a shame there are just 1,000 bottles. Drink 2013-2025. (Readers should note that a bottle of 2000 Nebbiolo had aged gracefully with style.)Vina Alicia is a small estate located in Lujan de Cuyo where the two vineyards are situated: San Alberto, a high density planting at 11,300 vines per hectare and Vina Alicia itself. It was founded in 1998 by Alicia Mateu Arizu, the wife of Alberto Arizu at Luigi Bosca, and it is now managed by her son, Rodrigo Arizu. He is one of many young winemakers experimenting with different clones in Mendoza. Vina Alicia embraces more “esoteric” varieties for the region, and with some considerable success.Importer: Southern Starz, Huntington Beach, CA; tel. (866) 57-STARZ
