Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Embrazées has a very refined, tensile, mineral-driven bouquet that is focused and sophisticated, yet is only just beginning to show what it can do. The palate is very well balanced with a strong saline character on the entry, bitter lemon and fresh pear following after, the oak present but not too domineering, allowing the finish to express the mineralité of the soils. Chapeau Sophie!

The 2011 Chassagne Montrachet les Embrazees has a strict, linear, stony bouquet that leans towards the tension of Puligny more than Chassagne. But it deserves an applause for the delineation and focus. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity. It has just a touch of dried honey on the back palate that seems to lend weight, although it just cuts off a little abruptly compared to other vintages that I have tasted. Still, this is a commendable Chassagne that should drink well over the next decade.

Today the 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Embrazees is a bit tighter and more focused than the Baudines. Clean veins of minerality support layers of vibrant, chiseled fruit in the Embrazees. Ideally, the wine is best cellared for another year, but this is without question an interesting and fascinating wine. A hint of white flowers and mint lingers on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. Vincent Morey began harvesting on September 17th. All of the 2010s were bottled before the 2011 harvest. Morey told me he seeks to maintain freshness in his wines, and therefore sees nothing to gain from longer elevage. I also tasted a handful of highly attractive 2011s from barrel. The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Embrazees is a seamless, elegant wine. It possesses striking, exuberant fruit with nod towards the tropical and exotic. It is a large-scaled, ample Burgundy endowed with considerable size and breadth. A round, generous finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. Vincent Morey began harvesting his 2009s on September 10. The wines saw batonnage every two weeks. The malos were very fast, and were completed by January.
