The Volpe Pasini 2015 Colli Orientali del Friuli Merlot Zuc di Volpe Focus is a steely and determined expression of this soft and consistent grape. Much of the wine's power comes from the bouquet, which opens to dark cherry, blackberry, burnt ember and potting soil. There is a touch of sour fruit or bitter almond on the close, but otherwise the focus is played out mostly in terms of black fruit and spice spread over a tight, medium-weight texture. Some 15,000 bottles were made.

The 2007 Colli Orientali del Friuli Merlot Zuc di Volpe Focus exhibits developed aromas of ripe fruit, blackberry preserves and cherry liqueur. A pretty, mineral tone appears on the close with extra shadings of spice and leather. The wine boasts great extraction and density that hits the mouth with pleasurable intensity. The 2006 Focus (Merlot) is a more ambitious red than the Refosco, but I can't say it is more convincing. The oak tannins are less polished and the overall pleasure of what is in the glass just can't match the simpler, juicier and better balanced Refosco. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Truly wonderful, with a creamy, smooth texture and lavish notes of ripe blackberry, chocolate fudge, cedar and smoke that grow in intensity and succulence as it warms. Exciting and vibrant in the mouth, with an excellent, firm structure, elegance and a polished quality throughout.
