Tasted out of barrel, the 2012 Melange Red checks in as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Malbec and Syrah, all of which will be aged 12 months in 22% new American and Hungarian oak. Plum, licorice and spice-box-like aromas all emerge from the glass and this well-made, easy going effort should drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully for 3 to 4 years. Waterbrook’s red wines are still a work in progress but the 2008 Melange Noir can be recommended. It is a four variety blend with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the lead. It is a round, savory, easy-to-understand red that will pair well with burgers and pizza over the next 2-3 years. Waterbrook was a Walla Walla pioneer, one of four existing wineries when I made my first tasting trip in 1990. They have since morphed into a relatively large brand after being purchased by Precept Brands and moving into a new winery on the outskirts of Walla Walla. It appears that over the past 2-3 years quality has been steadily improving and this batch of new releases, particularly the whites, should make many friends for the winery. Released quite young, this grapy red blend is a perennial favorite, for it mixes well-sourced grapes and substantial flavors of Washington-grown fruit at a modest cost. 40% Merlot, 32% Cab, 11% Cab Franc, 9% Sangiovese and 8% Syrah in this vintage, an interesting blend that brings dark tar and licorice along with plum and black tea.
