The latest edition of Zilliken’s successful 3,000-case brand, 2004 Riesling “Butterfly” A.P. #14 (which, incidentally, carries the same name – not the translation “Schmetterling” - inside Germany) combines fruit from Saarburg’s Rausch and Antoniusbrunnen in a dry-tasting but not technically “trocken” wine of 11.5% alcohol. Sweet cherry, toasted almond, and wood smoke notes in the nose lead to a glossy palate combining a sense of stuffing and mouth-filling fruit and slate that will, however, still strike those who aren’t familiar with German Riesling as “l(fā)ight”. Peaches, faintly tart apple skin, toasted almond and slate finish the picture. Importer: Rudi Wiest, Cellars International, Carlsbad, CA; tel. (800) 596-9463
