Zuccardi makes its own version of Vintage Port from the Malbec grape. When the fermenting grapes achieve a residual sugar level of 120 grams per liter, the fermentation is stopped by fortifying it with wine alcohol and it is then aged for 25 months in French oak. The finished product is 19% alcohol. The 2003 Malamado Malbec is purple-colored, exhibiting an attractive nose of plum, blueberry compote, dried figs, and nuts. The wine is full-bodied, sweet, rich, and full-flavored with additional notes of cinnamon, almonds, and black fruits emerging on the palate. Structured and well-balanced, it should easily evolve for 10-15 years and drink well through 2035. Familia Zuccardi is a family owned winery started in 1963 when they planted the first vineyard in Maipu, then a desert region, followed in 1973 by a second vineyard in Santa Rosa, another desert. Familia Zuccardi has also been a pioneer in the introduction of non-indigenous varieties into Argentina. These are bottled under the Textual label.Importer: Adam Sager, Winesellers Ltd., Skokie, IL; www.familiazuccardi.com
