The 2013 Morey St Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru comes from heavy clay soils. It is 100% whole cluster as usual because of the old vines that produce small berries. It has well-defined blackberry, undergrowth and fern-like aromas, just a hint of Bandol-like animal character coming through and lending complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh in the mouth, very tightly wound and linear with a precise, quite citrus finish that offers a twist of red cherry and salinity on the aftertaste. This should evolve into a pretty wine, but it will require three or four years in bottle.
