Perhaps the only reservation was with the 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Juline, which is their modern-styled blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah aged 18 months in new oak barrels. Lacking Chateauneuf du Pape typicity, it is a spicy, oaky effort with lots of black fruits as well as overwhelming notes of roasted coffee and vanilla. There is a lot here and perhaps with age the oak will become more integrated and the appellation's character will come forward. The other wines are very successful in 2008. I was surprised that Paul Autard chose to make all three of his cuvees in 2008, but when you taste the wines out of bottle, you can see how successful this estate was.Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel.
