The opaque blue/purple-colored 1999 Syrah Hop Barn Hill is an amazing achievement. Produced from yields of less than one ton of fruit per acre, this wine demonstrates what can be achieved from extremely ripe fruit (picked at 29o brix) that is fermented dry, and aged in 100% new French oak. A classic Syrah, it possesses aromas and flavors of blackberry liqueur intermixed with cassis, pepper, and bacon fat. With unreal levels of glycerin, richness, and concentration, it is akin to drinking the blood of the grape. There is a viscosity and unctuosity that must be tasted to be believed. It is a thrilling, historic Syrah for California! Sadly, there will be less than 50 cases produced. The good news is that the Martinellis have planted several additional acres of Syrah.
