To cap the retrospective, Francoise opened a bottle of the 1949 Chateauneuf du Pape la Crau de Ma Mere, which was made by her parents. The bottle had a perfect fill and I suspect hadn't been moved more than once or twice in the past 66 years or so. Possessing a healthy ruby color as well as beautiful notes of truffles, underbrush, curry and cedary spice, with still present and sweet fruit, it has a silky, integrated texture, no hard edges and was still thoroughly enjoyable. It was a fitting cap to a terrific tasting and a real privilege to taste.
