The Val di Suga 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a single-vineyard expression from a plot of land located in the southwest quadrant of the appellation where average temperatures are higher. This is a dark and brooding Sangiovese with thick concentration and an inky dark appearance. Vigna Spuntali sees an important oak regime with two years in new French 300-liter barrels. Dried blackberry and cherry follow to teriyaki, barbecue spice and dark cola. The oak element is significant, but I find that the integration is more successful in Vigna Spuntali given the richer and more textured quality of fruit at its core.

Black cherry and plum flavors are wrapped in a cloak of spicy oak and layers of tannins, while accents of licorice, tobacco and black tea emerge as this winds down on the finish.
