My favorite Aphillanthes Cotes du Rhone-Villages is the 2001 Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. A blend of 80% Grenache, and 20% Mourvedre, it tastes like a sensational Chateauneuf du Pape. Aromas of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, Provencal herbs and pepper emerge from this inky ruby/purple-colored effort. It possesses superb definition as well as great freshness and vibrancy for its enormous concentration and weight. In 2001, the 2000 reminded me of a grand cru Musigny from Burgundy, and it's not a stretch to say the same thing about the 2001. There is a liveliness, minerality, and freshness to this cuvee that is remarkable given its full-bodied, massive, concentrated style. This wine will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring, and should last for 10-15+.
As evidenced by these tasting notes as well as those from the 2000s and 1999s, this is an extraordinary offering, bottled without fining or filtration. It is among the most exciting wines being produced from any of the Cotes du Rhone appellations.
This estate, located in the village of Travaillan, and run by perfectionist Daniel Boulle, has quickly emerged as one of the most serious Cotes du Rhone producers. This offering is an ageworthy, super-concentrated example of what can be accomplished by a passionate, highly committed producer.
