Smoky stones can be detected in the aromatics of the 2003 Riesling Spatlese Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz. Of the hundreds of 2003 German wines I tasted for this report, this is the only one that exhibited quinine flavors, generally a ubiquitous characteristic in Deutsch Rieslings. Light to medium-bodied, it pops on the palate revealing tonic-drenched rocks and tangy minerals. Expressive, plush, and smile-inducing, it is a candidate for drinking over the next 8-9 years.
