LAST TASTED 6/94Patience has never been one of my virtues, but after twenty years this wine still seems formidable, and oh so backward and tough. I am beginning to think the tannin will ultimately win the battle between the wine's fruit and structure. The color remains an impressive saturated plum/garnet, with only a hint of amber at the edge. The tight nose reluctantly offers up earthy, truffle-like scents intertwined with aromas of jammy black-cherries, herbs, and wood. Full body and impressive extract remain hallmarks of this twenty-year old wine. However, the ferocious tannin with its astringent bite is more noticeable than ever. I am not giving up on it as there are still too many impressive components, but my confidence is beginning to wane.
