The 2012 Escolha Muros Antigos is a blend of Alvarinho and Loureiro. It clocks in at 12%. Often one of the nicest value points in the lineup, this is pretty fine again this year. This blend has good depth for its level, a bit of power and a diverse flavor medley, laced with a little apple and pear. If it is not quite as elegant as the Loureiro will be, it has more notable grip on the finish while retaining a certain, laid back feel. It is quite charming. While it is wide open and likely to drink beautifully this summer, it does finish with some intensity as it warms and airs out. Vertical tastings that I’ve published based on notes at the winery certainly demonstrate how well these can age (they were in fine shape going back to 2005 when tasted in the Summer of 2012). Note also, however, that the distribution system does not always produce the same results as a winery tasting, so exercise at least a little caution. There is certainly no reason to wait. It is wonderful now. Drink now-2018.
