The estate’s 2006 Collazzi is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in French oak. It is a beautiful wine that captures the essence of these international varieties while avoiding the excessive heaviness and oakiness so typical of the genre. Firm yet silky tannins frame blackberries, herbs, cedar, menthol and subtle French oak in this engaging, generous red. The Rosso is already fairly open at this stage, but has the potential to develop nicely over the coming years. It will be a fascinating wine to follow. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
These are the first wines I have tasted from Collazzi, a property that has belonged to Lamberto Frescobaldi’s family on his mother’s side since 1933. These new releases are very promising.
