The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all’Oro shows abundance and opulence with bold density and fine aromas of dark fruit, tar and licorice. The wine continues to hold it own and the only significant critique I can make is that there is a slight bitterness to the tannin that has yet to integrate. Otherwise, this wine is built like a tank and will continue to endure. Drink: 2014-2024.

Dark ruby red. Aromas of blackberry, dried flowers and cherry. Very intense and concentrated nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long flavorful finish. Rock solid and compact. This wine is true-blue Brunello, meant to be cellared for 10 or more years. Flavors of plum, cherry and currant are pure, and there’s far more fruit here than wood.
