There is a new wine from Torres, a wine from the Costers del Segre appellation where they have had vineyards for a long time but had never released an appellation bottle until today. This 2012 Purgatori is a blend of Cari?ena, Garnacha and Syrah matured for 15-18 months in barrique, 40% of them brand new. Dark and brooding, opaque and powerful in an end-of-the-1990s style, it has plenty of balsamic aromas, graphite, peat and is quite oaky with tons of vanilla and cinnamon. The palate is medium to full-bodied with loads of oak-related flavors and some chunky tannins. Give some time in bottle to absorb the oak. It would be much better with a lighter imprint from the élevage.
