The 2005 CALLABRIGA Douro is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Light and bright, it also comes in at a modest 12.5% alcohol. A typical Douro blend, it has some of those sweet ‘n’ sour plum notes, probably very ripe, perhaps a little overripe, Touriga Nacional, a modest mid-palate, and modest structure. It is an elegant everyday wine with some personality and a sunny demeanor. Granting that its structure and concentration level are modest and the sweet ‘n’ sour notes won’t be to everyone’s taste, the price is reasonable. If you’re tired of the run of the mill quaffers, this blend is a low cost introduction to the Douro that has some personality. Drink now-2011. Sogrape is Portugal’s largest wine producer, making wine from many different vineyards and regions. The Callabriga line is Sogrape’s attempt to present various regional styles in affordable bottlings. The regular bottlings are all easygoing and tasty. Their Reserva counterparts add some depth and structure. Both lineups present some decent values.Importer: Evaton, Inc., Stamford, CT; tel: (203) 968-8220
