The Pagos del Moncayo portfolio begins with the 2006 Garnacha-Syrah, 60% of the former, 40% of the latter. Dark ruby colored, the wine offers a richly fruity nose of blueberry and black cherry that jumps from the glass. Full-bodied, spicy, and layered, the wine has no hard edges. Drink this crowd-pleaser over the next 3-4 years with meat and game.
Campo de Borja, located in the northwest province of Zaragoza, 200 miles west of Barcelona, has a winemaking tradition dating back to the 12th century. However, the D.O. dates only to 1980. Bodegas Pagos del Moncayo, owned by the Aibar family, has played a significant role in the rebirth of this once forgotten region. Although it is only 6 years of age, the estate works exclusively with vines in excess of 80 years.
