The 2010 Aglianico del Vulture Piano del Cerro is packaged in a heavy glass bottle and boasts massive aromatic intensity to match that symbolic weight and heft. The bouquet shows rich tones of spicy tobacco, Spanish cedar, vanilla bean, nutmeg and cinnamon. The fruit tones are buried far under and show with difficultly. What you do get resembles prune and dried blackberry. The tannins are extra firm and sweet. They appear more shaped by the oak than they are the grape. Here's a fun fact: The little spider on the label pays tribute to the cult of the tarantula that is celebrated in local Pizzica music and folklore.
