The 2008 Block 2 Chardonnay is more open at the moment revealing pronounced notes of meal and struck match with some apricots and lemon curd, green guava and toast plus a little chalk dust. Crisp, concentrated and medium bodied, this wine has a lovely satiny texture and a very long finish. It should be best from 2011 to 2016+. Winemaker Blair Walter continues to work his magic with the recent releases from Central Otago’s most famous Estate. Vibrant, enticing mineral and stone fruit nose. Unctuous body, hints of clove and spice. Slatey, mineral-tinged, long finish.

Rich, toasty and custardy, this is a big Chardonnay that retains a sense of balance, with a creamy texture and a powerful core of citrusy fruit that comes through on the finish. Based on a couple of older vintages, this wine should last at least 7–8 years from the vintage, but I find them most attractive in their youth. ——J.C.(7/1/2010)—— 91
