The 1999 Volnay 1er Cru from Coche-Dury has a perfumed nose, quite stony and perhaps more herbaceous than I expecting, a surprise given the lushness of the vintage. The palate follows suit with crunchy red and black fruit, with quite firm tannin in the mouth to the point where you could almost describe it as "rustic." Yet there is still fine balance here and lip-smacking freshness and vitality right through to the Pommard-like finish. I would opt to drink this now, but you could continue cellaring this for another 6-8 years, possibly longer. Tasted January 2016.
