The 2010 4 Kilos is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 40% Callet and 10% Merlot and has a vivacious black olive, lavender and briar-scented bouquet with well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe blackberry, fennel and thyme, leading to a very composed finish with beautifully integrated oak. Excellent. Drink now-2015.
I have been an avid fan of “4 Kilos” for the last couple of years: a winery that demonstrates how great wine can originate from unlikely corners. It was set up in Mallorca in 1996 by ex-Anima Negra winemaker Francesco Grimalt and musician Sergio Caballero. They marry indigenous grape varieties such as Callet and Fogoneu with international varieties and vinify the wines in a converted sheep farm in open top oak vats. The name? That comes from their initial investment of 4 million pesetas.
