The profound 2000 Montenero (50% Nero d'Avola, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak) boasts an inky/purple color as well as a dazzling perfume of espresso, toast, vanilla, new saddle leather, scorched earth, and creme de cassis. As the wine sits in the glass, notions of licorice and camphor also emerge. There is great richness, fabulous palate penetration, full body, an unctuous texture, and a 40+ second finish. This riveting offering from Sicily is indicative of the progress being achieved by many wineries on this island. The famed Umbrian oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella, has been brought in to practice his magic at this winery located in Castelbuono, Sicily. The results are remarkable.
