The 2010 Las Rocas Garnacha, a hefty, powerful Grenache boasting 15% natural alcohol, was aged in tank (three-fourths) and older French oak barrels (one-fourth). Notes of crushed rocks, raspberry liqueur, sweet cherries, licorice and Mediterranean herbs jump from the glass of this terrific value. Medium to full-bodied, soft and round, it is ideal for drinking over the next several years.
The wines of this producer (which I believe is a cooperative) were first brought into the United States with great fanfare by Eric Solomon of European Cellars. Several years later Solomon sold his rights to Gallo, who now import three separate cuvees, all outstanding bargains. The total production of these three wines is well over 100,000 cases, with the old vine cuvee the smallest at 20,000 cases.
