Lovers of old vine Carignan should check out the 1998 Seleccion Carinena. Produced from 80-year old Carignan vines cropped at a measly .5 tons of fruit per acre, this full-bodied, rich, concentrated effort is loaded with red and black fruits intermixed with new saddle leather and minerals. My experience with Carignan has shown that as impressive as it can be young, it never develops nobility with aging. This might be the exception, but I would still opt for drinking it during its first 8-10 years of life.Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, various American importers including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel.
