The Waterbrook 2009 Merlot Reserve smells of maple syrup in its oak-induced meld of caramelized and resinous notes, characteristics, however, that do not upstage the intense impression of ripe cassis. Sweet freesia-like floral notes add a further dimension of sweetness that is complemented by the wine’s satiny texture. This dries out just a bit disappointingly in its finish, almost surely a result of its barrel regime. But the delicious overall effect should be preserved for at least the next couple of years.
One of numerous brands under the umbrella a Precept – Washington’s largest privately owned wine company – Walla Walla-based Waterbrook is, on the strength of the two wines to come my way over the past year, a source worthy of further investigation.
