Paolo Monti’s 2000 Barolo Bussia seems to have suffered a bit from the searing heat and the lack of rainfall of the vintage. The aromas, quite spicy and with important notes of vanilla and cedar, are overbalanced in their emphasis on oak and the fruit is slightly herbaceous. The palate shows a certain force and intensity, but the dry and slightly compact character of the finish suggests that the producer was working with stressed grapes. Like various others in the zone, Monti might want to rethink his use of barrels – in vintages of a certain difficultly such as 2000, it’s anything but obvious that new oak is going to solve a lot of problems. It seems more likely, in fact, that it’s going to cause them.Importer: Michael Dvorkin, Riviera Imports, Long Island City, NY; tel. (917) 328-8830
