One of the deepest reds I have tasted from Qupe over recent vintages is the 2001 Syrah Alisos Vineyard. None of these wines exceed 13.5% alcohol as there is obviously an attempt by the winery to keep the alcohol levels in check. A classic example of power married to finesse, it exhibits a deep saturated ruby/purple color as well as precise, nicely built aromatics of black currants, plums, figs, earth, and pepper. Impeccably pure and medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin, this stylish, persuasive offering will drink well for 7-8 years.
Readers who love Pinot Noir should check out these Syrahs as they offer elegant, fresh, lively flavors, high acid profiles, and nowhere near the mass, concentration, or power of some of this varietal’s bigger examples.
