The 2006 Series C is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has a very well defined, Pomerol-like bouquet with a savoury, smoky/chestnut accent. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine balance. Savoury-tinged red-berried fruit entwined with cocoa, black pepper and dried orange peel define the mid-palate and the Cabernet Franc asserts itself on the finish and governs the personality of this wine. Drink now-2018+ Vilafonte is a joint venture between renowned California winemaker Zelma Long, viticulturalist Phil Freese and Warwick Estate proprietor Mike Ratcliffe. They only produce two wines, and that are both based on Bordeaux varieties from their 18-hectares of vines in Paarl (though the winery itself is in Stellenbosch.) Considering their price point they both represent excellent value and err towards a lush, sensual, caressing style without becoming cloying or saccharine.
