From an under-rated site that has excelled in the hands of many growers this vintage, Chauvenet’s 2005 Nuit St.-Georges Les Chaignots displays an aroma of black cherry with a faintly bitter, medicinal note. In the mouth, intense chalkiness and bitter chocolate low tones complement fresh black cherry, black currant and blackberry and lead to a darkly-hued, palate staining finish. Abundantly but finely tannic, with wood (three of seven barrels are new) relegated to an entirely supportive role, this superbly concentrated wine is an excellent candidate for a dozen or more years in one’s cellar. The 2004 Chaignots (of which, surprisingly, there were only five barrels) is also superb and ageworthy.
