The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve (an intriguing and very unusual blend of 80% Syrah, 15% Grenache, and 5% Mourvedre, aged 75% in foudres and 25% in small oak) is more monolithic. Dense purple, with loads of black fruits, tar, coffee, and camphor, it seems to lose some typicity and authenticity of the region with such a high Syrah component, but it is an interesting and well-made wine, and on that basis it will certainly turn out to be excellent, possibly even outstanding. However, if you’re looking for the classic aromas and flavors of Chateauneuf du Pape, I don’t think this wine will ever provide it.
(Not yet released)
No 2008s were presented for tasting, but this estate has turned out three cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape in 2009, and all three of them are very well done. Nalys has always been considered one of the best producers of white Chateauneuf du Pape, long before the whites of this appellation improved so much qualitatively, and in 2009 they have two cuvees of white.
