Lignier's Clos St.-Denis (Lignier is the largest vineyard holder of this great Grand Cru) displays more tannin than most of his other wines, but still has a ripe, velvety, berry fruitiness, a moderately long finish, and medium body. It is also marked by much more new oak. However, I do not share Lignier's belief that this wine is better than his profound 1985 from this vineyard. All things considered, I suspect if the yields had been lower and Lignier had bottled his 1988s earlier, it would have been significantly better.
