Whole bunch pressed directly to barriques and aged on lees for over 10 months, the 2009 Clos de Ste. Anne Chardonnay gives pronounced notes of meal, toasted almonds and apple tart over hints of pears, peach blossoms, coriander seed and lemon curd. The palate exudes opulence and spiced apple flavors with toasty/nutty layers while maintaining an elegant medium body marked by refreshing acidity. The finish is long and savory. Approachable now, it should drink best 2012-2016+. James and Annie Millton are among the few biodynamic producers in New Zealand and certainly make a great case for the methods with the sheer quality and individuality of their wines. The Chardonnays are up there with the best in New Zealand and can age very well, often requiring a year or two in bottle before they begin to reveal the power and layers beneath their elegance.
