(Release date 1/1/02)The spectacular 1997 Brunello di Montalcino, which has been bottled, but will not be released until January, is a thrilling, seamless example of Brunello that I hope is indicative of how special this vintage will be. A deep opaque ruby/purple color is atypical for Brunello, but the nose of dried herbs, spice box, fruitcake, red and black fruits, minerals, and earth is stunningly complex. It is full-bodied, with supple tannin, a velvety texture, and a tremendously long finish. It can be drunk now or cellared for 14-15+ years.A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel.
