The 2008 Crianza is a little reductive on the nose and this suppresses the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy dark berry fruit and a touch of pepper on the finish. This is rather a “tough,” brazen Crianza. Drink now-2014. Both the Reserva 2005 and Gran Reserva 2004 were tiring, neither coming up to scratch.
I found the wines from Bodegas Carlos Serres to be commercially sound, but frankly a little underwhelming in the context of others I tasted during my time in Rioja. However, their entry-level wines are extremely well-priced.
