Wow, what a spectacular wine! Made just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation by Mariano Garcia and his sons (Garcia was formerly the winemaker at Vega Sicilia), this primarily old Tempranillo cuvee was aged in small casks (mostly French). It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a rich bouquet of creme de cassis, melted licorice, acacia flowers, and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, fleshy, and succulent, with a striking minerality underlying all the fruit, this extraordinarily powerful yet elegant, long, rich, heady 2000 is best drunk during its exuberant youth ... over the next 5-7 years.Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel. The 2000 Cesar Principe has a very respectable, attractive bouquet with clearly defined scents of red cherries, red currant, incense and an irony aroma – not a million miles away from a fine Burgundy. The palate has not lasted as well as the aromatics, with slightly oxidized red fruit and a diffuse finish. It still holds a modicum of interest, but I would not hold on to bottles much longer. Drink now. Cesar Principe, named after Ignacio Principe’s father, is a pure Tempranillo from the estate’s own parcels close to the winery, and it is supplemented by approximately thirty growers. Most of the vines are between 60 and 100 years in age cultivated upon stony soils. It is usually aged in 80% French and 20% American oak, of which around 40 to 45% is new, for around 14 months. They believe that the wine is at its peak two or three years after release – a view I would agree with. To put it candidly, it offers too much pleasure in its youth to satisfy the curiosity of aging.
