The 2015 Chianti Classico is a much darker and extracted wine than expected. The base is obviously Sangiovese (with 5% Canaiolo and Colorino) and the wine ages in oak casks for up to 12 months. But in a blind tasting, this wine would not be pegged, with any degree of assurance, as a Chianti Classico. The bouquet reveals bold notes of dried cherry, blackberry and exotic spice. The finish shows structured power and firmness. Despite that bulk, this is a mid-weight effort with moderate length on the close. It's a great value too, with 200,000 bottles produced this vintage.
