For twenty years, this beautifully designed winery perched on a mesa in the Santa Ynez valley north of Los Olivos has been producing wines with mixed results. Recent vintages suggest that the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets is moving upward. The 1991 Gewurztraminer displays a subtle rose petal fragrance, good body, and enough fruit and character to warrant attention. I am an unabashed admirer of Alsatian Gewurztraminer and have been openly critical of the insipid efforts emanating from California, but this wine has merit. A bit more intensity could have put Firestone's Gewurztraminer near the top of the microscopic hierarchy of good Gewurztraminer producers in California. Tel. (805) 688-3940
