The 2003 Tinto (Quinta das Baceladas) is a charming, single Quinta wine from Bairrada. It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the signature Bairrada grape, Baga. It feels full in the mouth, but the mid-palate is medium in weight. This opens rather disjointed, and then improves steadily, showing refined tannins, and nice, persistent flavors. There is a mocha coffee note on the finish, which is quite respectable for this price range. There is also touch of bitterness on the finish. It is a wine that often feels suave and sophisticated, providing both flavor and structure. After being decanted for an hour or so, it becomes more austere, showing less flavor and more tannin. There were approximately 2,200 cases produced. Drink 2007-2013.This big company, with holdings throughout several Portuguese wine regions, brought in Michel Rolland and Pascal Chatonnet in 1999 to consult. Chatonnet remains, working with winemaker Francisco Antunes. From what I have seen, this big company does a nice job of crafting quality wines at generally fair prices.Various importers: Tri-Vin Imports, Mt. Vernon, NY; tel.
