This wine is made with consultation from one of Italy's legendary oenologists, Giacomo Tachis. It is produced from 100% old vine Carignan, which grows as well in southern Italy as it does in the south of France and Spain. I was impressed with the 1997 Rocca Rubia, which is reminiscent of a top-notch Cotes du Rhone. A seductive nose of sweet, earthy, black cherry fruit, saddle leather, and pepper jumps from the glass. The wine is full-bodied, ripe, chewy, and supple-textured. According to the importer, the vines are planted in almost pure sandy soil. This 1997 should drink well for another 4-5 years.
