The 2008 Alazan Pinot Noir CJ’s Barrel is a 68 case cuvee made with 50% whole clusters. It sports an outstanding bouquet of sandalwood, exotic spices, floral notes, and wild berries. As good as the nose is, on the palate it is just a bit narrow. Whether it will fill out and achieve an outstanding rating is the $64 question. If it does, my score will look stingy indeed. The Kingston family owns a 300 acre hillside vineyard in cool-climate Casablanca 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 900 feet above sea level. Ripe and well-layered, displaying lots of red licorice up front, a core of red and black currant and fig fruit, and nice shadings of spice and black tea that help fill in the finish. Big, dark and brash, and very much in the modern California style, meaning it’s rich, creamy, oaky and full-bodied. The nose brings toast, heat and potency, while the flavors are saturated, spicy and revolve around wild berry, tea, spice, caramel and savory warmth.
